Scott and Stephanie’s Story: Choosing a Well-Organized, Communicative Builder

Not long ago, Scott and Stephanie made a big move from the sprawling plains of Texas to the majestic mountain terrain of Waynesville, North Carolina. Beyond the standard anxiety that comes with a cross-country move, they were hit with some major decisions when it came to designing a new, custom home, starting with choosing a builder to help walk them through the entire process of creating the home of their dreams. As they did their research, they came to the conclusion that they would feel more secure with a national builder that has local roots in Asheville as opposed to a small, local only builder. They wanted to work with a team that was well established and stable that they could trust for quality construction, but also remain satisfied knowing they were getting the most for their money. Schumacher Homes met their criteria exactly, putting their minds at ease for both craftsmanship and value.

The quality of the building was extremely important to them. They, of course, wanted a home that was not only beautiful and custom fit to their wants and needs, but made to last a lifetime and beyond. But, equally important was the experience of the builders themselves. They wanted people on site who could attend to their concerns and explain the intricacies of the building process. Their Construction Manager from Schumacher’s Asheville, NC location, Dustin, was their point person when it came to the building experience and they couldn’t have been happier.

“Dustin pours his heart into his job,” Scott and Stephanie stated.

It’s important to think about construction in a similar light as going to the doctor. While you want to know that the doctor has all of the experience to get the job done right, you also want to be sure the doctor is surrounded by amazing nurses, as they are likely the ones who you will be communicating with on a regular basis, letting you know how things are going, when your next appointment is, and why the process is what it is. According to Scott and Stephanie, Dustin was ideal for his position. He communicated well, managed timelines appropriately, and was truly concerned for them, the homeowners.

With Schumacher Homes, Stephanie and Scott  got the advantages and peace of mind of Schumacher Homes being America’s largest custom homebuilder combined with the personalized experience and top-tier bedside manner of their Construction Manager, Dustin.

Ryan and Amy’s Homeowner Story: How Well Does Schumacher Homes Work Through Major Customizations?

Ryan and his wife Amy had been through the home-building process before. They chose a production builder for their first home, and, well, the ability to customize came up short, leaving the couple longing for a home that would truly fit their family’s lifestyle. Ryan’s co-worker, a Schumacher Homeowner for 10 years, recommended Schumacher Homes. They put Schumacher on their list of builders to research.

With competitive pricing, customization became key. Ryan and Amy wanted the ability to customize both the inside as well as the outside of their home. They’d already built with limitations, and were not prepared to go down that road again.

True customization takes powerful building know-how combined with a personal understanding of your homeowners.

“Schumacher Homes listened to our wants and needs – our price range, what we wanted out of a floor plan and exterior,” said Ryan. “I’m an engineer, and Schumacher was willing to listen to me and look at the ideas I drew up to ensure we were all on the same page. Our New Home Consultant at the Charleston, SC Schumacher Homes design studio talked us through every detail, making sure the products and plan we chose would work for both Amy and me, as well as our four sons.”

The couple customized Schumacher Homes’ Callaway plan – moving walls, adding an extra bedroom, expanding the sides of the home by 8-feet, and adding a door on the large wraparound porch so their four boys could enter through the laundry room after a day of outdoor play. Amy had seen images of exteriors in a magazine and brought those in to customize the exterior of the Callaway.

“Our builder was great to work with,” said Amy. “He was so flexible with our custom choices in design and exterior finishes. It just made everything easy and really raised our comfort-level in building this time around. We knew we were going to get exactly what we wanted.”

A Pennsylvania native, Ryan grew up surrounded by natural beauty; wide open spaces unmarred by development. He and Amy bought two acres, with a dream of building a southern-style home with an expansive front porch that would be situated perfectly to take advantage of its surroundings.

We wish this lovely family years of great memories in their Schumacher Home.

Schumacher Homeowner Story: How to Position Your Home on Your Lot

Matt from Chesterland, OH found the perfect lot, well, sort of: Right school district √, great established neighborhood √, has lots of trees, a little stream and nature preserve border √. Wait.  Lots of trees. Stream. Bordered by nature preserve.

Matt suddenly realized that he had no idea how his dream home could best take advantage of the footprint of his dream lot.

An important part of the pre-construction phase in custom homebuilding is to consider the position of your home on your land to maximize your yard space, curb appeal, window views, driveway placement, and overall investment.

Matt called us to help evaluate the atypical lot situation and review home positioning options. Our Schumacher Homes team found quite a few considerations, then solved for them.

  1. The lot had larger than normal setback due to a utility easement impacting where Matt wanted the driveway to go. Setbacks are building restrictions imposed on property owners where building within a certain distance from a curb, property line, or structure is prohibited.
  2. Matt planned a dream setting for his dream home, so we needed to take into account the in-ground swimming pool and separate pool house/hobby garage he was also having constructed.
  3. Since the lot was one acre, the team still needed to figure out how to properly place Matt’s 3,500 square foot, two-story, custom home on his land to best portrait frame its modern farmhouse exterior for maximum curb appeal.

The Schumacher Homes Team established a building footprint. We came up with this site plan and topographical map of the lot as a solution to accommodate the new home and all associated amenities to make Matt’s dream home and landscape a reality.

Building a home requires an expertise beyond what’s contained in the four walls. Schumacher Homes provides the know-how to make the most of your dream home’s setting.
