Every home has a story. With NASCAR kicking off this weekend in Daytona and spring fishing season right around the corner, we celebrate The Speckled Trout, a Schumacher Homes Earnhardt Collection™ home named for Kerry and René Earnhardt’s youngest son Jeffrey.

René says like a Speckled Trout, Jeffrey is always on the move for the next big adventure, even if that means swimming against the current to reach his goals. Kerry seconds that, saying it’s true that Jeffrey never stops moving and from the get-go has been flush with the independent Earnhardt spirit.“All Earnhardt Collection™home plans are special to us, but the ones named in honor of our children have a special place in our hearts,” says René. “His love for the outdoors and passion to experience life to the fullest made it easy to name this home ‘Speckled Trout.’”

Jeffrey Earnhardt

Perfect for a lot with a great back yard, Speckled Trout is a wonderfully spacious floor plan that tucks the family living areas in the back of the home. Speckled Trout has a great open flow between the kitchen, dining area and great room highlighted by a two-story ceiling in the great room. The upstairs owners’ retreat features a huge bedroom, beautiful bath and a large walk-in closet. Plus, there’s a roomy upstairs loft that can easily become a third bedroom. There’s even an over-sized, offset porch in the front that adds to the home’s distinctive personality.

“Jeffrey let us know early on that like me, his uncle, his grandfather and his great-grandfather, he would be following in the family racing tradition, and he has,” says Kerry. “He’s a great driver, and we couldn’t be prouder of him.”

At Schumacher Homes, we always say, “Your Inspiration has a Home.” For Jeffrey Earnhardt, we can say his passion has a home. Find the home where your life will unfold.

How to Shop for a Custom Home – Part 2: Tour a Home Under Construction

Tour-Under-Construction_470x246Customize anything? What does that really mean? You may have seen the floor plans and toured model homes, but what are real people doing?

It’s time to check out a home under construction. Whether the home is in the framing, drywall, trimming, or final stages, you can walk the floor plan and see the many customizations. The best way to see the quality that goes into a home is to visit one under construction.

Schumacher Homes Custom BuildIt’s important to see what is under the hood. You may choose to go to several to see construction in the various stages. Take the time to touch the materials, and ask plenty of questions. Ask about what features were included in the baseline price of the home.

Pay close attention to the quality of the materials. Quality products and materials will factor in as a return on your investment. Ask with what level of warranty the builder is willing to back their home. That should give you some insight into how durable the materials are that are used.

Building an energy efficient home will also save you money in the long run. Check the mechanicals, which include plumbing, electrical, and heating and cooling. Ask if they are energy efficient.

Schumacher Homes Custom BuildYour new home should exceed your expectations in craftsmanship and standards of quality. Ask the builder about his attention to detail. Have him explain how he’s different from the competition. Talk to him about his accessibility during the build process.

The National Housing Quality Award is the benchmark for quality in the building business. Builders who receive this award are honored for their excellence in construction standards and customer satisfaction. Be sure to ask prospective builders if they’ve received this designation.

Just like touring model homes it’s important to visit a home under construction so you can get an instinct for what feels right to you. More than anything, touring under construction homes is one more way to spark your imagination.

“When I saw this plan, I knew this house was the one, because it has everything she loves about our home,” says Kerry. “When we started dating, I gave her the nickname ‘Sugar Maple.’ If you’ve ever seen one, they’re stunning trees, and when their leaves change, there’s nothing more beautiful. They’re also unbelievably strong. If you’ve met René, you know ‘strong and beautiful’ is pretty much a perfect description.”
